Continuing with our question as to why the Mishneh chooses the example of a long-lasting love between friends that is not as long lasting as that of a mother to child , one might add as follows:
There is a reference in the book of Lamentations that merciful mothers cooked their children!
During the siege of Jerusalem, food was impossible to get.In the plight of overwhelming hunger, people lost their minds. Even something as horrible as eating one's own children
seemed acceptable.
This didn't happen with David and Jonathan. Notwithstanding the danger to their lives , they stood by each other. The reason that their love could last in an environment where even a mother's love is lost is because they attained a love that touches the depth of the soul. The love of a mother is a physical love. When the physical cannot continue, even the most profound love evaporates. A love that is based on the depths of the soul can survive even in Auschwitz, even in the depths of Gehinom.
For this reason , the Rabbis tell us that a Rebbe can lift the souls of his students out of purgatory. For a true heart penetrates even the most evil of circumstances. The soul's love extends into the most horrid of depths and to the greatest of levels. Love is an eternal bond that connects throughout all time, space and circumstance.
